Scientists Create Fentanyl Vaccine
The increasing trend of opioid "designer drugs" has prompted scientists from The Scripps Research Institute to develop a new strategy to curb addiction and prevent fatal overdoses. This new strategy focuses on a vaccine which is intended to block the toxic effects of fentanyl. Professor Kim Janda, also a member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at TSRI mentions, "the importance of this new vaccine is that is can block the toxic effects of this drug [fentanyl], a first in the field." The next step is for the researchers to design a more potent vaccine which may take on the form of a combined anti-fentanyl and heroine vaccine.
