The Carroll County Times reported on May 2nd, 2016 that counterfeit prescription medications laced with the synthetic opioid fentanyl are appearing on the black market and leading to multiple deaths across the United States. Carroll County is the first jurisdiction in Maryland to have confirmed the presence of counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl, and health officials believe they may become widely distributed.
