On June 1st, 2016, The New York Times reported that the death rate in the United States rose last year for the first time in a decade, caused by more people dying from drug overdoses, suicide, and Alzheimer's disease. The death rate rose to 729.5 deaths per 100,000 people in 2015, from 723.2 per 100,000 in 2014. The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids also released this information with a focus on how drug overdoses have impacted the death rate.
