The NDEWS Coordinating Center thought you would be interested in this new study from from London, England, conducted by Joanna Hockenhull, et al and published in Forensic Science International. The study, An observed rise in γ-hydroxybutyrate-associated deaths in London: evidence to suggest a possible link with concomitant rise in chemsex, found a 119% increase in the proportion of GHB-associated deaths in 2015 from 2014. Twenty-nine of the 61 deaths detected from 2011 through 2015 occurred in 2015. Researchers found that, "[a]ll of the GHB-associated deaths except one were male (98%), with a median age of 37 years (range 22-67 years) and 84% over the age of 30 years. In  57% of the GHB-associated deaths there was a known history of previous drug use."  Nearly half (49%) of the deaths occurred at the decedent's home or a friend's home, and one third of the decedents were diagnosed with HIV.
