The Maryland Poison Center released their monthly update, ToxTidbits, for September, which covered carfentanil. In the past few weeks, carfentanil has emerged in the news, and reported for causing several overdoses across the United States. Carfentanil is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance in the U.S., but it is not approved for human use. Carfentanil has posed a problem in communities because it has been mixed with heroin, or sold as heroin. Carfentanil is 10,000 times more potent than morphine, 5,000 times more potent than heroin, and 100 times more potent than fentanyl. The main issue is that the lethal dosage is unknown. Since the intented use is not for humans, effects resulting from this substance can be deadly in small doses.
