The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently released two new reports on the results of the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). NSDUH is an annual survey of approximately 67,500 individuals across the US who are aged 12 and older.
According to SAMHSA, "27.1 million people aged 12 or older used an illicit drug in the past 30 days, which corresponds to about 1 in 10 Americans (10.1 percent)...approximately 20.8 million people aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder (SUD) related to their use of alcohol or illicit drugs in the past year,2 including 15.7 million people who had an alcohol use disorder and 7.7 million people who had an illicit drug use disorder."
