January 3, 2017: Cocaine was responsible for the second-most drug overdose deaths in 2014. By analyzing data from CDC WONDER, data suggested that mixing the stimulant with opioids was the reason for the increase in cocaine-linked mortality rates. The trend has led to further questions about whether users are intentionally mixing cocaine with heroin and/or fentanyl, or whether they are receiving tainted products. Cocaine use was up among young adults in 16 states, according to a SAMHSA report, raising additional public health concerns.
