Using Hospital Electronic Health Records to Monitor Drug Use Trends in Emergency Department Patients

To see the most current Maryland electronic hospital records (EHR) data, visit the Emergency Department Drug Surveillance (EDDS) system on the CESAR web site. (Posted: June 11, 2020)

De-identified EHR data of positive toxicology results for 13,773 patients at the emergency department at University of Maryland Prince George’s Hospital Center (UM PGHC) were used to describe drug use trends from July 2013 through December 2018.

Declining positives for opiates and peak levels of marijuana positives were found.

The Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR), which manages the NDEWS Coordinating Center, is participating in the MPowering the State Opioid Use Disorders Project. MPower supports collaborations between research scientists at the University of Maryland’s Baltimore (UMB) and College Park (UMCP) campuses.

See this 2-page report.

A similar study of EHR data from four Baltimore hospitals was released in February 2019.
